Hello! We are a team of 6th and 7th graders called The Shifty-Shifty People from Andover, Massachusetts, and we’ve been participating in Destination Imagination (DI) for the past 6 years. DI is an educational program that teaches skills like creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork through different competitive, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) challenges. We are excited to announce that this year we were one of the top-scoring teams in our region! We won first place in the middle school Fine Arts challenge, and even won a special Renaissance Award, which is given for Outstanding Design, Engineering or Performance. We now have an opportunity to present our Challenge solution at Global Finals – an international competition where we will compete against teams from around the globe. This year, Global Finals will take place in Kansas City, Missouri. Teams that attend Global Finals are responsible for their own fundraising to cover their costs (registration fee, travel, room and board, getting our props transported, etc). It’s expensive to go, but we’ve been working hard all year and can’t wait to compete on a global stage. We would greatly appreciate anything you can contribute to support us as we travel to Kansas City in May!

Curious about our Challenge and the solution we created? This year, the Fine Arts challenge required us to create a Flipped Tale — starting with a well-known story and telling a new story from a different perspective. We chose the movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, in which some kids get sucked into a video game and have to win the game in order to get back home. In our version, Nigel (an NPC or non-player character) from the movie becomes the main character, and viewers learn that he is in fact one of the original creators of the game, who accidentally got sucked into the game and has been trying to get home ever since. In addition to writing an original script and creating all the costumes and scenery, we built some amazing props. Our favorite is the Tree of Life (nicknamed Linda), which is a 6-foot-tall papier-mâché tree that comes to life, using a hydraulic system we created to rotate branches, when a resin jewel we made is placed in the tree and lights up. We also created a replica of the jeep from Jumanji that Nigel drives across the stage – it’s big enough to fit us all, and building it so it can be assembled just before going on stage was not easy!Thank you for coming here to learn a little about our team, and thank you for your support!
