Destination Imagination (DI) is an educational program that teaches skills like creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork through different competitive, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) challenges. We are excited to announce that, this year, four of our local teams will be moving on to compete at Global Finals in Kansas City, Missouri! Global Finals is an international competition where teams from around the world gather to showcase their solutions, as well as to learn from and be inspired by each other.
Teams that attend Global Finals are responsible for their own fundraising to cover their costs (registration fee, travel, room and board, getting props transported, etc). It’s expensive to go, but these kids have been working hard all year and can’t wait to compete on a global stage. We would greatly appreciate anything you can contribute to support the teams as they travel to Kansas City in May!
We had an incredible number of teams qualify for globals this year! Scroll below to learn more about each of our teams traveling to Kansas City, MO in May to compete amongst the DI elite. Thank you for your support!
119-94963 – SL – The Shifty Shifty People (Scientific)
We are a team of 8th and 9th graders that have been doing DI for 1-8 years. For the scientific challenge this year, we researched the planet CoRoT-7b. Our skit is about futuristic tardigrades that travel from the cold side of the planet to the hot side, in search of fuel for their life support system. They meet lava creatures that teach them about a special phenomenon on the planet where it actually rains different types of rocks. This inspires the tardigrades to recycle to keep their life support system running. As part of our project this year, we learned how to solder wires and program an Arduino!

119-90657 – ML – Team High 5 (Engineering)
We are a group of five 6th and 7th grade girls and this is our first year doing DI. Even over the course of a short period of time, we have learnt so much about teamwork, perseverance, problem-solving skills, and creativity. We chose to participate in the engineering challenge and our task was to build a Transporter that could carry weights across a wire while also including a Daring Display and Ensemble Spectacle in our 8 minute skit. Our presentation has to include a contemporary circus setting which is why we made our Transporter a “tightrope walker”. We were so excited when given the opportunity to compete at Globals and are looking forward to seeing how other teams approached the same set of guidelines for the challenge.

119-84242 – ML – Da Kruzers (Technical)
We are a team of 7th graders that have been doing DI for 3 years. We continue to learn more about teamwork, perseverance and goal setting with each passing year as we work on our projects. For the technical challenge this year, we built assembly equipment and destruction equipment based on the concepts related to mechanical, computer science, electrical and electronics engineering. Our skit was an imaginative story that we came up with from the Egyptian past, way before the pyramids were built. We are excited to go to the Globals and are looking forward to presenting our creations in front of a broader audience and learning from other teams.

119-91327 – EL – Seven MUSKateers (Scientific)
We’re a team of 5th Graders from West El who have been doing Destination Imagination for four years. We’re super excited for Globals—this will be our first time attending! This year, we tackled the Scientific Challenge (Worlds Beyond) and worked hard to create a hilarious script (judges’ words, not just ours!) featuring Elon Musk landing on a methane-rich, gassy planet. That’s why we called ourselves The Seven MUSKeteers. This year, we really enjoyed creating our costumes from recycled materials, writing technobabble, designing a technobabble depictor, and coming up with a ‘gassy’ scientific demonstration. We can’t wait to share our ideas on the global stage, connect with other teams, and learn from this amazing experience. This will be a big step for us as we head into middle school next year!
